What's Cloud Computing?
For most businesses, IT services typically take the form of software hosted on servers or computers for which there are costs associated with hardware and maintenance. This traditional model is being undermined by the combination of virtualization software, broadband, and fiber-optic technology, which together have made the internet faster and much more powerful, transforming it from a series of simple web pages into a platform of distributed applications, which can be programed by users. Even studies performed by Gartner and IDC foresee a progressive reductionin the need for local business data centers
Typically, users think of the Internet as a cloud; it is out "there". It is not important how the Internet works, which protocols it uses, or which route data takes to get from one place to the next. All users are interested in is ensuring that the Internet provides what they want whenever they want it or, at the very least, without too much delay.
Similarly, Cloud Computing supplies a variety of services, albeit (technically speaking) in a different way, which does not need to be explained here. The word "cloud" implies remoteness and global availability - anything placed in the "cloud" is managed as a service somewhere else by someone else. End users of the cloud-based services do not need to worry about management or maintenance issues; they simply connect to and use the services provided.
In theory and the practice, cloud computing uses the power of the internet to distribute computer-based resorurces such a software applications, software applications, storage, power of calculation in the same way as other every-day utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and so on.
The benefits of the cloud computing for businesses are:
- a better return on investments for hardware and software
- a considerable reduction in costs for IT, administration and infrastructure
- shorter deployment cycles which can help improve the business' ability to react to problems and change
